Welcome to the St Helens Birds and Wildlife blog. We welcome your reports from across the borough regarding all forms of wildlife. Please click on the "Report a sighting" tab if you would like to contribute to this blog.

We ask that you refrain from posting exact breeding locations of any species which may be considered scarce or vulnerable, and in particular schedule 1 species. In the context of St Helens, schedule 1 species usually means kingfisher and little ringed plover. Little ringed plover should not be reported at all on this blog between 1st May and 1st August.

Scarce or vulnerable species include but are not restricted to any species of wader, ducks other than mallard, all owls, any birds of prey, grey or yellow wagtails, grey heron, all grebes, Cetti’s warbler, water rail, willow tit, corn bunting etc. If in doubt, please ask.

Carr Mill Dam

Monday 27th June: 8 young Great Crested Grebe in two broods of 4; 3 Cormorant; 67 Mallard; 1 female Tufted Duck; 5 Common Tern; 4 Oystercatcher chasing and calling high overhead; 1 Kingfisher; 2 Nuthatch.

Reed's Farm/Mossborough Roundabout

Tuesday 21st June; 80 Lapwing (failed &/or non-breeders?); pair Oystercatcher; one Red-legged Partridge; 2 singing Corn Bunting.

Counted 34 Lapwings in the fields opposite Havannah flash this morning, 6-8 is the norm for this area.

Moss Lane

All the usual cast along Moss Lane this afternoon, the only unusual sighting were the three painted lady butterflies...

Moth

Caught this lovely looking Elephant Hawkmoth in my garden last night, after a poor start, things look like they are picking up.

Bats

Pipistrelle bats were detected at the following locations last night, around Haydock. 10pm.
Clipsley lane .
Cooper lane footpath .
Woods behind Station road .
No other species of Bat was detected.

Pond dipping

Spent an hour pond dipping with the Grandchildren this afternoon, the pond behind Chain lane estate.
Smooth newt.
Water stick insect .
Tadpoles.
Stickle back.
A good afternoon to get the kids interested in nature

Tawny Owl

Thursday 2nd June: 1 Tawny Owl adult with 1 young in woodland east of Barrow's Farm, Chadwick Green, Billinge at 0800.
