Welcome to the St Helens Birds and Wildlife blog. We welcome your reports from across the borough regarding all forms of wildlife. Please click on the "Report a sighting" tab if you would like to contribute to this blog.

We ask that you refrain from posting exact breeding locations of any species which may be considered scarce or vulnerable, and in particular schedule 1 species. In the context of St Helens, schedule 1 species usually means kingfisher and little ringed plover. Little ringed plover should not be reported at all on this blog between 1st May and 1st August.

Scarce or vulnerable species include but are not restricted to any species of wader, ducks other than mallard, all owls, any birds of prey, grey or yellow wagtails, grey heron, all grebes, Cetti’s warbler, water rail, willow tit, corn bunting etc. If in doubt, please ask.

We reserve the right to edit or delete posts which contravene this rule.

Haydock Park

Blue-headed Wagtail flava male. One showing the characters of this 'species' today 0555-0620+ was also present on 5th April at 0750. There is a possibility that it's an inter-grade with Yellow flavissima a pair of which were also present today. Walk east along the Lodge Lane Pumping Station overflow track to the central 'crossroads'. The bird has been around the soil/waste heaps here and along the track northwards.

20.00-20.30 Quick half an hour's observation on my way home from work at the fiddle proved to be a great idea.
20 Bar tailed godwits very actively feeding on the far side of the wetland.
2 Redshank
4 Yellow Wagtail/pied wagtail
4 Shovelers 2m/2fem
2 Dabchicks
I Male Wheatear
I possible male Whinchat , couldn't get a 100% positive ID, it was very flighty and the rain had started sheeting down. Lapwings and Swallows -good numbers and a buzzard going down for lapwing chicks..... unsuccessfully. This gem of a place just keeps getting better.
